Cobb County, with a population of 755,754, is the third most populous county in Georgia. Along with several adjoining counties, Cobb County was created on December 3, 1832, from the large Cherokee County territory, land which was confiscated from the Cherokee Nation and redistributed to settlers via lottery. It was named for Thomas Willis Cobb, a U.S. representative and senator from Georgia. Cobb County is bordered by Cherokee County, Fulton County, Douglas County, Paulding County, and Bartow County. It is located immediately to the northwest of the Atlanta, Georgia, city limits. There are several high points in Cobb County including Sweat Mountain in the extreme northeast portion, and Kennesaw Mountain, in the north-northwest near Marietta. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Cobb County ranks as the most educated county in Georgia, and 12th among all counties in the United States. The largest city, and county seat of Cobb County, is the city of Marietta. There are five other cities in Cobb County. Marietta’s population of approximately 59,089, makes it one of Atlanta’s largest suburbs. It was incorporated as a village in 1834, and later as a city in 1852. The city has six historic districts, some of which are on the National Register of Historic Places. The Marietta Museum of History exhibits the history of the city and the county with thousands of artifacts from Marietta residents and businesses.
