Fulton County is located in the north-central portion of Georgia. It has a population of 1,041,423, making it Georgia’s most populous county and the state’s only county with over 1 million residents. Fulton County was created in 1853 from the western half of DeKalb County. It was named for Hamilton Fulton, a railroad official who acted as surveyor for the Western and Atlantic Railroad. Fulton County grew rapidly after the American Civil War, becoming a center of railroad shipping, industry, and business. The adjacent counties include Cherokee County, Forsyth County, Gwinnett County, DeKalb County, Clayton County, Fayette County, Coweta County, Carroll County, Douglas County, and Cobb County. There are 15 cities within Fulton County. The largest city, and county capital, is Atlanta, with a population of 486,290. It is the economic center of the Atlanta metropolitan area, home to 5.8 million people, and the ninth largest metropolitan area in the United States. The city is situated among the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, and straddles the Eastern Continental Divide. Rainwater that falls on the south and east side of the city flows into the Atlantic Ocean, and the rainwater that falls on the north and west side of the city flows into the Gulf of Mexico. As of 2010, Atlanta is the seventh most visited city in the U.S., with over 35 million visitors per year. It is home to a number of museums and outdoor activities. It is also home to the world’s largest indoor aquarium, the Georgia Aquarium.
