DuPage County, is the 2nd most populous county in Illinois, with a population of 916,924. DuPage County was formed on February 9, 1839, out of Cook County. The county was named for the DuPage River, which was named after a French fur trapper. The DuPage River and Salt Creek flow through DuPage County. The adjoining counties are Cook County, Will County, Kendall County, and Kane County. DuPage County is mostly developed and suburbanized, although some pockets of farmland remain. It is home to many large corporations including the Oakbrook Center, the largest open-air mall in the nation. There are 40 municipalities in DuPage County, with the city of Wheaton being the county seat, and the city of Aurora being the largest city. The city of Aurora is a suburb of Chicago, located in portions of Kane, DuPage, Kendall and Will counties. Once a mid-sized manufacturing city, Aurora has grown tremendously since the 1960s. It is now the second most populous city in the state with a population of 201,110. Aurora has long been a regional transportation hub, and is the final stop of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe line of the Metra commuter rail system into Chicago.
