Madison County is the 9th most populous county in Illinois, with an estimated population of 265,428. Madison County was formed on September 14, 1812, and included all of the current state of Illinois north of St. Louis, Missouri, as well as all of Wisconsin, part of Minnesota, and Michigan's Upper Peninsula. It was named for President James Madison, the 4th President of the United States. The county boundaries were adjusted periodically until it was reduced to its current size in 1843. The county is bordered by Bond County; Clinton County; Jersey County; Macoupin County; Montgomery County; St. Clair County; St. Charles County, Missouri; St. Louis, Missouri; and St. Louis County, Missouri. There are 9 cities, 20 villages, and 24 townships within Madison County. The county seat of Madison County is the city of Edwardsville. Granite City is the largest city in the county with a population of 28,908, and is within the Greater St. Louis Metropolitan area. The city was originally founded as a planned company city by German immigrant brothers for their granite ware kitchen supplies factory. The employees were required to live in the city. The plant and city prospered until the 1950s when aluminum, stainless steel, and Pyrex replaced iron-based utensils. However, the granite pattern created by the company remains popular today.
