The 14th most populous county in Illinois is Tazewell County. The majority of the population lives along the county's western border. The county was founded in 1827 out of a portion of the adjoining Peoria County. The boundary was adjusted periodically until its present day borders in 1841. The county was named in honor of Littleton Tazewell, who served in the U.S. Senate, and became Governor of Virginia in 1834. Woodford County, McLean County, Logan County, Mason County, Fulton County, and Peoria County adjoin Tazewell County. There are a number of historical places of interest in the County. Of the 35 municipalities, there are 6 cities, 10 villages, and 19 townships. The county seat, and largest city in Tazewell County is the city of Pekin. The city is also the second most populous city of the Peoria metropolitan area, after Peoria. Pekin lies on the Illinois River, and is a "gateway" community on the Illinois River Road National Scenic Byway. The Illinois River Road follows the Illinois River 140 miles south through backwater lakes, bottomland forest, floodplain wetlands, and other diverse habitats.
