Marion County, located in the approximate center of Indiana, is the largest county in the state, with an estimated population of 950,082. It was created from part of the so-called "New Purchase" lands that had been obtained by the Treaty of St. Mary's on April 1, 1822. It is named for Francis Marion, a Brigadier General from South Carolina in the American Revolutionary War. Marion County has a consolidated city-county government, known as Unigov. Four of the cities in the county retain full autonomy and are considered "excluded cities." The remaining 21 municipalities within the county are considered "included cities," cities with limited authority. There are seven counties adjoining Marion County. The counties are: Hamilton County, Hancock County, Shelby County, Johnson County, Morgan County, Hendricks County, and Boone County. The county seat, state capital, and largest city in Marion County is the city of Indianapolis. As of 2017, Indianapolis, with a population of 863,002, is the 3rd most populous city in the Midwest, and the 16th most populous city in the U.S. The city covers 368 sq. miles, making it the 16th largest city by land area in the United States. Indianapolis is home to two major sport clubs, the NBA's Indiana Pacers, and the NFL's Indianapolis Colts. It is also home to the world's largest single day sporting event, an automobile race known as the Indianapolis 500.
