The second most populous county in Kansas is Sedgwick County, with an estimated population of 513,678. Most of the land of modern day Kansas was acquired as part of the Louisiana Purchase from France in 1803. In 1861, Kansas became the 34th state in the United States, with Sedgwick County being founded in 1867. It was named after John Sedgwick, a Major General in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Sedgwick County is located near the southern border of Kansas, and is bordered by Butler County, Cowley County, Harvey County, Kingman County, Reno County, and Sumner County. Sedgwick County is divided into 27 townships with 20 cities. The county seat, largest city in the county, and the most populous city in the state, is the city of Wichita, with an estimated population of 390,591. Wichita is located in south-central Kansas on the Arkansas River. Beginning as a trading post on the Chisholm Trail in the 1860s, it became a destination for cattle drives traveling north from Texas to Kansas, earning it the nickname "Cowtown." Today, Wichita is a regional center of culture, media, and trade with aircraft manufacturing playing an important role.
