Macomb County, located in the eastern portion of Michigan, is the third most populous county in Michigan. It has an estimated 2017 population of 871,375, and is part of the Detroit, Michigan, metropolitan area. Detroit is located south of the county's southern border. The counties bordering Macomb County are Lambton County, Ontario, Canada; St. Clair County; Lapeer County; Oakland County; and Wayne County. Macomb County was organized on January 15, 1818, as the third county in the Michigan territory. The county was named in honor of Detroit-born Alexander Macomb, Jr., a highly decorated veteran of the War of 1812. Macomb County is home to more than 130 parks covering 12,000 acres. It also has 31 miles of shoreline along Lake St. Clair and over 100 marinas. There are 27 cities, townships and villages in Macomb County including three of the most populous municipalities in Michigan. The city of Mount Clemens became the county seat of Macomb County in 1818. The city of Warren is the largest city in Macomb County with an estimated population of 135,022. It is also the third largest city in Michigan, and metropolitan Detroit's largest suburb. The city is home to a wide variety of businesses with General Motors being the largest employer.
