Named after a county in England, Essex County was formed in 1683. Today it is New Jersey’s third most populous county, and the second most densely populated. It is part of the New York City metropolitan area and has a mix of urban and suburban areas. Newark is the county seat and most populous city; East Orange is the only other city. Essex County has 20 boroughs and townships. Bordering counties are Bergen and Hudson to the east, Union to the south, Morris to the west, and Passaic to the north. Essex County is home to the first county park system in the nation, as well as many historical sites such as the Thomas Edison National Historical Park. Many rail lines and highways cross Essex County on their way to New York City, and Newark Liberty International Airport serves the metro area.
