Bernalillo County is the most populous county in New Mexico with a population of 676,953. Bernalillo County was one of seven districts established during Mexican rule. In 1853, within two years of the creation of the New Mexico Territory, Bernalillo County became one of that territory’s nine original counties. Bernalillo County is in central New Mexico, and with a total land area of 1,161 sq. miles, it is the third-smallest county in New Mexico by area. It is bordered by Sandoval County, Santa Fe County, Torrance County, Valencia County, and Cibola County. There are two villages, and the city of Albuquerque, the county seat and only city, in Bernalillo County. Albuquerque’s population is 558,545 as of July 1, 2017, and is the 32nd largest city in the United States. The Sandia Mountains run along the eastern side of Albuquerque, and the Rio Grande river flows through the city. Urban sprawl is limited on three sides of the city, and continues to grow at a strong pace to the west. Because of less costly land and lower taxes, much of the growth in the area is taking place outside of the city of Albuquerque itself. The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is an event that takes place the first week of October every year. It is the world’s largest gathering of hot-air balloons from around the globe.
