Clark County, with an estimated population of 2,204,079 in 2017, is the most populous county in Nevada. The county was formed by the Nevada Legislature on February 5, 1909. Much of the county was part of Pah-Ute County, Arizona Territory, before Nevada became a state. The county was named for William Andrews Clark, a Montana copper magnate and U.S. Senator. The Colorado River forms the county’s southeastern boundary. Clark County is bordered by Lincoln County; Mohave County, Arizona; San Bernardino County, California; Inyo County, California; and Nye County. There are a number of national protected areas in the county. Clark County is home to many gaming related companies including massive modern casino resorts. The Las Vegas Strip is located in unincorporated Clark County, not within the city of Las Vegas. Las Vegas is a top three destination for business conventions and a leader in the hospitality industry. There are five cities in Clark County with Las Vegas being the county seat and largest city. The city’s population of 648,224, makes it the 28th most populous city in the United States. The city anchors the Las Vegas Valley metropolitan area, an area that serves as the leading financial, commercial, and cultural center for Nevada. The city bills itself as the “Entertainment Capital of the World.” Today, Las Vegas annually ranks as one of the world’s most visited tourist destinations.
