Washoe County was formed in 1861 when Nevada was still a territory. When Nevada became a state in 1864, Washoe County was consolidated with the former Roop County, attaining its present size. Today, it is Nevada's second-most populated county. Reno is its county seat, largest city, and third largest city in Nevada. The county has one other city and numerous unincorporated communities. Washoe County forms part of Nevada's western border with California; the California counties of Placer, Nevada, Sierra, Lassen, and Modoc form Washoe County's western border. Washoe County is also part of Nevada's northern border with Oregon; the Oregon counties or Harney and Lake form Washoe County's northern border. Nevada counties bordering Washoe are Churchill, Humboldt, and Pershing on the east; Lyon on the southeast; and Carson City and Storey on the south. Washoe County is home to Pyramid Lake, the largest natural lake within Nevada's borders. Lake Tahoe, on Washoe County's southwestern border, is the largest natural lake but is shared with California and the Nevada counties of Carson City and Douglas.
