Kings County is coterminous with the Borough of Brooklyn, which is one of the "Five Boroughs" of New York City. It is the most populous county in New York, and the second most densely populated county in the United States (after New York County, popularly known as the Borough of Manhattan). If the rest of New York City were to disappear, Brooklyn would be the third most populous city in the United States. Brooklyn is the second largest of the Five Boroughs by land area, although it is the third smallest in New York State. It does not have a county government; each of the Five Boroughs is governed by the Mayor and City Council of the City of New York, although each borough has some limited self-government such as its own court system. Brooklyn is bordered by the Boroughs of Queens (County of Queens) to the northeast, Staten Island (County of Richmond) to the west, and Manhattan (County of New York) to the northwest. Founded in the mid-17^th century by Dutch settlers as the town of Breuckelen, it grew to be a major city and was merged with New York City by popular vote of its residents in 1898.
