Formed in 199, Fairfield County is bordered by Licking County to the north, Perry County to the east, Hocking County to the south, Pickaway County to the southwest, and Franklin County to the northwest. Its proximity to the city of Columbus in Franklin County makes it popular as a bedroom community. Its rural character, replete with trails, covered bridges, and Buckeye Lake, makes it popular with tourists. At one time Fairfield County was a glassmaking center; the Anchor-Hocking Glass Company was located there. Today, retail sales are the largest segment of the economy. Lancaster is the largest city and county seat. The county has two other small cities, 15 villages, and 13 townships. Fairfield County's most famous resident is William T.
