Licking County was formed in 1808 from part of Fairfield County, and is named for the numerous salt licks found in the area. Bordering counties include Fairfield on the southwest, Franklin on the west, Delaware on the northwest, Knox on the north, Coshocton on the northeast, Muskingum on the east, and Perry on the southeast. Newark, with a population of 47,000, is the county seat and the largest city. The nearby Newark Earthworks, the world's largest earthen enclosure, were built by the Hopewell Culture and are Ohio's Official Prehistoric Monument. Newark is also the home of the Longaberger Basket Company, whose headquarters building is a 7-story replica of a picnic basket. Licking County has 5 cities, 11 villages, and 26 townships.
