Multnomah County is the smallest county in area in Oregon but the state's most populous county with a population of 807,555. The county was formed out of two other Oregon counties on December 22, 1854. It is named after the Chinook word for the "lower river." Multnomah County is located along the south side of the Columbia River, and includes a number of extinct volcanoes. The Oregon side of the Columbia River Gorge forms the eastern portion of the county's northern border. It is bordered by Clark County, Washington; Skamania County, Washington; Hood River County, Clackamas County; Washington County; and Columbia County. The county is home to a number of Portland-area attractions. Eight cities are located in Multnomah County. The city of Portland is the largest city, and county seat. The city has an estimated 2017 population of 647,805, making it the 26th most populous city in the United States. Approximately 2,424,955 people live in the Portland metropolitan area. Roughly 60% of Oregon's population resides within the Portland metro area. Portland is frequently recognized as one of the world's most environmentally conscious cities because of its high walkability, large community of bicyclists, farm-to-table dining, public transportation options, and over 10,000 acres of public parks. Portland's climate is marked by warm, dry summers, and cool, rainy winters, making it ideal for growing roses. Portland has been called the "City of Roses" for over a century.
