It was created in 1843 as Twality County, and renamed in 1849 for George Washington, the first U.S president. The city of Hillsboro is the county seat and the county's largest city with a population of 102,347. It is located about 17 miles west of Portland, Oregon. The electronics industry is the dominating factor of the county's economy. Intel, a California based private for-profit employer, has a large concentration of employees in Hillsboro. In addition to high-tech industry, health care, retail sales, and agriculture including grapes and wineries are important to Hillsboro's economy. The oldest and largest winery in Washington County, the Oak Knoll Winery, was established near the city in 1970.
