Harris County, with a population of 4,652,980, is the most populous county in Texas, and the third most populous county in the United States. It was founded in 1836 as Harrisburg County by the First Congress of the Republic of Texas, and was named after John Richardson Harris, an early settler of the area. The original county boundaries were redrawn to its current configuration in May 1838. Harris County is bordered by seven counties including Montgomery County, Liberty County, Chambers County, Galveston County, Brazoria County, Fort Bend County, and Waller County. Four separate and distinct state universities are located in Harris County, one of which is the University of Houston System, the 3rd largest university in Texas. The University's annual impact on the area's economy equates to that of a major corporation. After 5 years, 80.5% of graduates are still living and working in the region. There are 24 municipalities solely within Harris County, and 10 municipalities partially located in adjoining counties. The city of Houston is the county seat, and largest city in Harris County. Its estimated population of 2.3 million makes it the most populous city in Texas, and the fourth most populous in the U.S. Houston has the most Fortune 500 headquarters of any U.S. city behind New York City. A seven mile system of tunnels and skywalks links downtown buildings containing shops and restaurants, allowing pedestrians to avoid the summer heat and rain while walking between buildings.
