Potter County is a county located in the High Plains Region of the Texas Panhandle. The county was organized in 1887, and was named for Robert Potter, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence. The following four counties adjoin Potter County, Carson County, Moore County, Oldham County, and Randall County. In the early 1980s, about 90 percent of the county consisted of farms and large cattle ranches. Livestock and livestock products account for over 50% of the county's agricultural income. There are two municipalities in Potter County. The town of Bishop Hills, and the city of Amarillo. Amarillo is the largest city in the Texas Panhandle, and the county seat. It is also partially located in the adjoining Randall County. Amarillo was once the self-proclaimed "Helium Capital of the World" for having one of the most productive helium fields in the United States. The city is also known as "The Yellow Rose of Texas," as the city's name is the Spanish word for yellow.
