Hillsborough County is the fourth most populous county in Florida. The 2017 estimated population of 1,408,566, gives Hillsborough County a population greater than 10 U.S. states. Hillsborough County was created on January 25, 1834, and was named for Wills Hill, the Earl of Hillsborough, who served as the British Secretary of State for the Colonies from 1768 to 1772. It is bordered by Pasco County, Polk County, Hardee County, Manatee County, and Pinellas County. In 2012, Hillsborough County had the second largest agricultural output among Florida counties with strawberries being the largest crop. There are only three incorporated cities in Hillsborough County: Plant City, Tampa, and Temple Terrace. Tampa is the largest city in Hillsborough County, and the county seat. It is located on the west coast of Florida on Tampa Bay near the Gulf of Mexico. Tampa is bordered by two bodies of water, Old Tampa Bay and Hillsborough Bay. The highest point in the city is only 48 feet above sea level. Tampa currently ranks second in the state behind Miami in terms of cruise ship travel. It is also home to a number of attractions and theme parks including Busch Gardens, Adventure Island, the Lowry Park Zoo, and Florida Aquarium.
