Suffolk County is one of 8 (out of 14) counties in Massachusetts with no county government. Its county government was abolished in 1999, and county functions were transferred to the state. Suffolk County still exists as a geographical and statistical unit, and it is currently the fourth most populous county in the state. It is bordered by Essex County on the northeast, Middlesex County on the northwest, Norfolk County on the south, and Massachusetts Bay on the east. It shares a water boundary with Plymouth County in the middle of the bay. Suffolk County is the smallest by land area in Massachusetts, and only has four cities. Boston, by far the largest, is the capital of Massachusetts and the former county seat. With 685,094 residents, Boston is also the largest city in both Massachusetts and New England. Suffolk County was formed in 1643, and later lost territory to Norfolk and Worcester Counties when they were formed.
