Haywood County, with a population of 59,036, is located in the western portion of North Carolina. Forty percent of the county is comprised by the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Pisgah National Forest. Haywood County is bordered by Jackson County; Swain County; Madison County; Buncombe County; Transylvania County; Cocke County, Tennessee; and Sevier County, Tennessee. Haywood County was formed from the western portion of Buncombe County in 1808, and was named after John Haywood, the State Treasurer from 1787 to 1827. There are four towns in Haywood County with the town of Waynesville being the county seat, and the largest town, with a population of 9,958. The town is located just outside the Pisgah National Forest. Waynesville is generally comprised of six neighborhood districts. The downtown district, once the main retail business center, is now home to art galleries, cafes, shops, and town and county government buildings. Several other districts are home to newer and larger businesses and retail stores.
