Located in the mountain region of the United States, Wyoming is the 10th largest state with 97,814 square miles. Along with Colorado and Utah, it is only one of three states to have borders along only straight latitudinal and longitudinal lines, rather than being defined by natural landmarks. Wyoming is bordered on the north by Montana, on the east by South Dakota and Nebraska, on the south by Colorado, on the southwest by Utah, and on the west by Idaho. It has 23 counties and has a population of approximately 586,000, the least populated state in the country. The largest city in Wyoming is the city of Cheyenne, the state capital, with a population of approx. 63,335.

Wyoming is located where the Great Plains and the Rocky Mountains meet. The eastern third of the state is high elevation plain called the High Plains. The western two-thirds is covered mostly by the Rocky Mountains. Due to the topography of the state, Wyoming is drier and windier than most U.S. states with greater temperature extremes. It is considered a dry state receiving less than 10 inches of rainfall per year. Summers in most of the state are warm with high temperatures averaging between 85 and 95⁰ F. However, summer nights are characterized by a rapid cooldown with even the hottest locations averaging in the 50 to 60⁰ F range at night.

The federal government owns almost half of the land in the state with the vast majority administered by the Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Forest Service, and the National Park Service. There are two national parks in Wyoming; the Grand Teton National Park, and Yellowstone National Park (the first designated national park in the world). Yellowstone National Park comprises many lakes, canyons, rivers and mountain ranges. It is also known for its many geothermal features, especially “Old Faithful” geyser. Old Faithful is a highly predictable geothermal feature that erupts every 44 to 125 minutes with an average height of 145 feet. More than 1,000,000 eruptions have been recorded. ^[1]

Wyoming was originally inhabited by several Native American groups. What is now southwestern Wyoming was part of the Spanish Empire and later the Mexican Territory until it was ceded to the U.S. in 1848, at the end of the Mexican American war. Wyoming became the 44th state on July 10, 1890.

The economy of Wyoming is different from other states with the main industries being mineral extraction including coal, oil and natural gas, and travel and tourism. In 2017, 8.7 million tourists visited Wyoming’s national parks and national landmarks including the Devils Tower National Monument (the first national monument in the U.S.). ^[2]
